Organic Food, what is it?

July 22nd, 2008

The term organic food often scares people off because they worry that there is going to be certain ingredients in the food that are different and possibly harm them, or think that they are not going to get the same nutritional value. Some people are concerned because they think that the taste is going to be different and that they are not going to like it.

Organics is the fastest growing sector in the food industry in North America. The reasons that more and more people are turning to organics are linked to the public fears about genetically modified foods, irradiation and the antibiotics that are being fed to animals such as chickens.

As we are seeing the obesity rate rising and realizing just how many unhealthy ingredients are going into our foods these days, people are beginning to see just how beneficial organic food is and understanding better why they too should switch from conventionally grown food.

To qualify as being certified organic food, it has to be free of commercial fertilizers for three years, be free of herbicides for three years, and the seed cannot be from genetically modified seed. For more information about organic certification check out Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Organic_certification

There are many resources out there that you can use to learn more about this food and what it has to offer. There are websites dedicated to selling organic foods or take a visit to your local supermarket and you will see that they have a section devoted to organics. You can also talk to your local nutritionist about the benefits of eating fresh, tasty organic foods.

By eating food that you know has been made with only natural and pure ingredients, you can feel better when you are eating and know that you are not filling up your body with harmful chemicals and byproducts.
